BBC, 5 January 2016

This week the BBC reported on a story about a woman who was given a retinal implant as part of a trial to restore some vision in those with advanced retinitis pigmentosa. Dr Susan Blakeney, clinical adviser to the College of Optometrists gave her thoughts:

“Those diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa in the past have had no treatment options, so the technology which has enabled Rhian Lewis to regain some of her vision is particularly exciting. A potential treatment could give hope for those affected by this inherited condition which slowly leads to loss of vision.

As with any clinical trial, we look forward to hearing the full outcome, and to see if there are ways in which this technology could be applied for the treatment of other eye conditions.

Most conditions that affect your eyesight are treatable. The College of Optometrists recommends that people have regular eye examinations so that if you do have an eye condition it is caught early. You should see your optometrist if you have any concerns about your eyes or eyesight.”
