Express, 8 January 2019

The Express published an article on 8 January 2019 on the best supplements for eyes. Our Clinical Adviser, Daniel Hardiman-McCartney FCOptom offered the following advice, “Although there is no strong evidence about the effect of diet on age-related macular degeneration (AMD), eating a wide variety of fruit and vegetables, including dark green leaves, is good for your general health and may support good eye health.

There are lots of dietary supplements on the market which claim to be beneficial for eye health. Currently, there is no solid evidence to suggest that the general population should be taking these supplements, or that healthy adults should use supplements to protect themselves against AMD in the future. However, they may be helpful for some people who have existing AMD. It’s important that you discuss whether or not they may be helpful for you with your optometrist.”
